The Teesdale Mercury 13/11/1918 reports:-
News has reached Staindrop that Signaller Arthur Fawcett of the East Yorkshire Regiment, youngest son of Mr John and Mrs Eva Fawcett, was killed in action in France on the 17th of October. Mr J. Fawcett is the esteemed architect of the Raby Estate, he having been thus and similarly engaged for between fifty and sixty years. The deceased soldier, who was twenty years of age, was at the time of enlistment an analytical chemist at Newcastle and on joining the colours, he went to Ireland for a while and was sent to the Western Front but six weeks ago. Signaller Fawcett was an old County School boy, and his father being an old member of the Congregational body, the young man played the organ at the church at Staindrop. Mr and Mrs Fawcett have yet one son in the navy and another in the army. The Rev. R.W. Young paid a fine tribute to the deceased young man's life and character on Sunday last in the Congregational Church. The 'Dead March in Saul' was played at the morning and evening service.
Arthur Fawcett is remembered in Staindrop on S133.01 and S133.03 and at Barnard Castle on B135.20
