2000 headstone

In Birtley Elisabethville Roman Catholic Cemetery is the headstone of a Belgian soldier which reads:-

"Patria Memor"

The original headstone had been replaced and the inscription in 2000 was as above.

Arthur Joseph Degeyter was born at Brugge on the 19th November 1893, the son of Auguste Henri and Clementia Puype. His profession was a wall paperer.

Arthur enlisted in 1913 with the service number 135/50201. He died of tuberculosis - meningitis at Birtley Elisabethville and is buried in the Roman Catholic Cemetery

Arthur Joseph Degeyter is remembered at Birtley on B127.11
