In Birtley Elisabethville Roman Catholic Cemetery is the headstone of a Belgian soldier which reads:-

Jean Baptiste Antoine De Waet was born on the 2nd May 1880 at Borgerhout, Antwerpen to Charles and Joanna Maria Van Vorstenbosch. He married Elisa De Winkel. Jean's profession was a metalworker.

Jean enlisted on the 3rd January 1901. With the service number 107/62102.

He was killed on the 5th January 1916.

Jean Baptiste Antoine De Waet is remembered at Birtley on B127.11.
