In Flatiron Copse Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave of R/19641 Rifleman Bertram Lucas Edwards serving with 2nd Battalion Kings Royal Rifle Corps (attached to 13th Rifle Brigade) who died 07/08/1916.

Brenda McMahon has submitted the following:-

Bertram (sometimes listed as Lucas) was born at Newcastle in 1886 to parents James and Emily. The couple had 4 children but sadly one died.

The 1891 census shows Bertram living with his family, including his sister Sarah and brother, Bernard at 43 South Street Gateshead. At that time his father is shown as working as a builder's clerk.

In 1901 Bernard is not shown on this census but Sarah is now employed as a school teacher. The family are living at 1A Fourth Street in the same Gateshead area.

By 1911 the family had moved again so they are now at a 5 roomed property at Cromwell Terrace, Gateshead. Everyone has done well for themselves.

James' father, is now an employer of men in the building trade, Sarah is still working and is now an assistant teacher with the Borough Council, as is Bertram, whilst Bernard (now back home) is a plumber.

Bertram enlisted into the Army at Gateshead joining the Kings Royal Rifle Corps. He was attached to 13th Rifle Brigade. He was killed in action on 7 August 1916 at Mametz Wood aged 30.

At the time of his death his parents were living at 30 Primrose Hill, Low fell, Gateshead. Monies owing to him we sent to his mother and sister.

Medals :-British War Medal and Victory Medal

Bertram Lucas Edwards is remembered at Bensham on B134.02 at Gateshead Fell on G39.064 and at Low Fell on L61.05
