GATESHEAD

Stamp, W.N., Pte., 1916
In Vermelles British Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France, is the Commonwealth War Grave of 40058 Private William Norman Stamp serving with the 2nd Battalion West Yorkshire Regiment (Prince of Wales Own) who died 10/10/1916.

Brenda McMahon has submitted the following:-

William was the son of John William (born in 1871 at Stamfordham) and his wife, Mary Annie (nee Wood). The couple married in 1897 then went on to have an only son, William.

William was baptised at Christ Church, Gateshead on the 6th April 1898. Unfortunately, Mary Annie died in 1899 at the early age of 29 years leaving her 3 year old son with his father.

By 1901 the household including brother, George (a printer), sister, Mary Ellen and a servant, Martha was living at 8 Hartington Street, Gateshead.

In 1911 teenage William was living with his father, John and unmarried aunt, Mary Ellen at the same address. His father was working as a grocer’s assistant with the Co-op whilst his sister looked after the home. At some point prior to the outbreak of the war William worked at Haggie Bros. Ltd. They were wire rope manufacturers.

William enlisted into the army originally serving as number 28860 with the Durham Light Infantry. He later transferred to 2nd Battalion West Yorkshire Regiment, number 40058.

2nd Battalion landed at Le Havre as part of the 23rd Brigade in the 8th Division in November 1914 for service on the Western Front.

William died of wounds on Tuesday 10th October 1916 at 26th Field Ambulance hospital located in France, part of the 8th Infantry Division.

His Aunt Mary was sole legatee of monies due to him.
