In Gateshead East Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave with a private headstone of 130974 Gunner Edwin Albany Nicholson serving with the "D" Battery 18th Brigade Royal Field Artillery who died 17/02/1919.

The headstone reads:-

In
loving memory of
my dear wife
Frances Annie Nicholson
died May 13th 1920, aged 58 years.
Thomas Wm. Nicholson,
died Nov. 27th 1934, aged 73 years.
Until the day dawns.
Gunner Edwin Albany Nicholson, R.F.A.
died Feb. 17th 1919 Aged 22 years.
at Gravesend Military Hospital
after 3 years service in France.
Thomas W.F. Nicholson
died Sept. 5th 1896, aged 11 months.

Very little information has been found about this young soldier. He was the son of Thomas William Nicholson and his wife Frances. Thomas was a builder and contractor living at 15 Hawthorne Gardens Gateshead in 1911. Their first son Thomas was born in 1895 but died September 1896 aged 11 months. Edwin Albany was born in 1897.

Edwin died at Gravesend Military Hospital in Kent after 3 years service in France and is buried in Gateshead East Cemetery. His mother Frances died May 13th 1920 and father Thomas in 1934.

Edwin Albany Nicholson is remembered at Gateshead on G39.004 and G39.032
