THORNLEY (Wear Valley)

Hutchinson, A.W., C.S.M., 1918
On Pozieres Memorial, Somme, France, is the name of 19/759 Company Sergeant Major Arthur Whitwell Hutchinson serving with Northumberland Fusiliers 19th Battalion (Tyneside Pioneers) who died 27/03/ 1918

Arthur, the son of John and Isabella was born at Thornley in 1892. He was baptised 5th September 1892. The couple went on to have several children Annie Ethel, John Alderson and Thomas Snowdon. Isabella possibly died in 1898.

The 1911 census shows young Arthur training as an apprentice mason.

Arthur joined the Northumberland Fusiliers and was a Lance Corporal when the Regiment embarked. He rose to the rank of Company Sergeant Major. He was killed in action on 29 March 1918 aged 26 years and is remembered on the Pozieres Memorial as he has no known grave.

Arthur was awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.

Arthur's brotherJohn Alderson Hutchinson joined the Durham Light Infantry and was killed 1 July 1916.

Another brother Thomas Snowdon joined the Northumberland Fusiliers 9th September 1914 and was transferred to the Durham Light Infantry in May 1915 to join his older brother John with service number 18/567. He rose through the ranks to be Acting Sergeant (unpaid). John and Thomas embarked for Egypt December 1915 and then to France March 1916. Thomas was awarded the Military Medal (Gazette 26/04/1917). He returned to Thornley in 1919.
