Hallimand/Hallimond, J.T., Pte., 1915
On Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial is the name of 2487 Private John Thomas Hallimand serving with ‘C’ Company, 1st/5th Battalion Durham Light Infantry who died 24/05/1915.

Brenda McMahon has submitted the following:-

In 1891, Marshall Hallimond was living with the Hutchinson family in the home of his married relative, Emily at Brick Row Byers Green. Marshall married Susan Grimes in 1897. Their son John Thomas was born in 1897.

The 1901 census shows the young family living at Front Street Coxhoe. Marshall worked as a coal miner/hewer. The couple had a son named Marshall after his father but he was born and died in 1901. There were 2 other sons 4-year-old John Thomas and 1-year-old, Joseph.

Susan, their mother, sadly died in 1905. In 1908 Marshall married as his second wife, Jane Maughan at Durham.

In 1911 the family were living at West Hetton Row, Coxhoe and included Jane's two sons George (22) and Edward (18) Maughan (both coal miner putters) plus another stepson Robert Morton aged 10 years, Marshall's sons John Thomas (14) and Joseph (11) and lastly Sidney aged 2 who was the son of Marshall and Jane.

John Thomas enlisted into the army and appears to have at first served with the 5th Battalion D.L.I. number 2487.

He was sent to France on April 17th 1915 by which time he was serving with the 15th D.L.I. number 275711.He was killed in action just over a month after arriving at the front.

The Newcastle Journal 27/05/1916 reports:-

Mr Marshall Hallimond, West Hetton Houses. Coxhoe. wbo;e son, Private Thomas Hallimond. has been missing since May 24th, 1915, has now received news from the War Office that it may considered that had been killed.

The Hartlepool Northern Daily Mail 18/07/1916 reports :-There was large attendance the service held in the Parish Church, Cassop-cum-Quarrington, in memory Private Rd. Blenkinsop of Bowburn, recently killed action, and Private Thos. Hallimond. 5th D.L.I., Coxhoe, who has been missing -above twelve months, and whoso death was lately assumed by the War Office. The service was read tho Rev. H. C. N. Renner curate in-charge, the-sermon being preached by the Rev W. Hodgson, curate, Thornley. Appropriate hymns were sung tho choir, and the Dead March played the organist.

John Thomas' dependent's pension papers mistakenly show his death as October 26th 1917.

First Dependent Mrs Emily Hutchinson (aunt) of Old Bowburn Cottage Coxhoe and second Mr Marshall E Hallimand West Hetton Cottages Coxhoe. The papers also Indicates ‘gratuity exhausted – over issue £9.0s.4d’

John Thomas Hallimond is remembered at Coxhoe on C103.01 as T. Hallimond, C103.03 as T. Hallimund, and C103.08 as J.T. Hallimand, at Stockton in S138.35 as John Thomas Hallimand with the correct date of death and at Tursdale on T62.02 as John T. Hallimond

He is also remembered in The DLI Book of Remembrance page 128 as J.T. Hallimand
