In Janval Cemetery, Dieppe, is the Commonwealth War Grave of M2/121501 Private Ernest Greenwell Hogarth, serving with the 43rd Auxiliary Park, Mechanical Transport Company who died 30/08/1917.

Paul Heatherington has submitted the following:-

Ernest was born in the spring of 1889 at Whittonstall. His father, Robert was a woodman/state forester, born in Ruckcroft, Cumberland. His mother, Dorothy was born in Whittonstall. Ernest was the fourth son in his family. His older brothers were called John, William and Robert. He had older sisters named Margaret, Zillah and Mary Jane and a younger sister named Sarah.

In 1891, the family were living at Watling Farm Cottage and his father was employed as a gamekeeper. They were still in Whittonstall village in 1901 but by 1911 had moved to 11 St. Cuthbert’s Terrace, Blackhill. By this time, Ernest was employed as a chauffeur.

Ernest enlisted on the 22nd September 1915 at Grove Park, Newcastle-upon-Tyne. He joined the Army Service Corps, Mechanical Transport Division. At the time of his enlistment, Ernest was 5’ 9’’ tall, weighed 10 stone 3lbs. His chest measurement was 36 inches.

On the 24th January 1917, Ernest married Margery Jane Dixon at Newcastle Registry Office. They made their home at Burn House, Shotley Bridge. Sadly, Ernest died on the 30th August of the same year, following a lorry accident. He was buried at Janval Cemetery, Dieppe.

The Blaydon Courier 03/09/1921 carries:

In loving memory of Ernest G. Hoggarth, (sic) of Benfieldside, who was killed in Dieppe, France, Aug. 30th 1917. ‘Gone, but not forgotten.’ Ever remembered by his loving father and mother, brothers and sisters.

Ernest Greenwell Hogarth is remembered on S27.01 and S27.03 (where his second initial is given as ‘C’)
