Brown, J.M., Pte., 1916
On Thiepval Memorial to the Missing is the name of 18171 Private John Monkhouse Brown serving with the 12th Battalion of the Durham Light Infantry who died 08/07/1916.

John Monkhouse Brown was born in 1892 at Newcastle the son of John and Mary E. Brown. In 1901 the family is at Davidson Street Gateshead and John is a Factory Labourer.

Sometime after this John Monkhouse Brown was in the Gateshead Guardians' Homes at Shotley Bridge.

In 1911 John is a boarder with Luke Thompson and his family at 7 Beech Grove Blackhall Mill Colliery. John is aged 19 and a miner hewer.

When war was declared John enlisted at Consett on the 7th September 1914. He joined the Durham Light Infantry.

John embarked for France 25/08/1915 and was killed in action 08/07/1916. He has no known grave.

John was awarded the 1915 star and the Victory and British Medals. Alfred and Mary his brother and sister received any monies owing to him.

John Monkhouse Brown is remembered at Medomsley on M36.03 and M36.01

His name is in the Durham Light Infantry Book of Remembrance kept in the DLI Memorial Chapel Durham Cathedral D47.013
