Every Name a Story

On Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium is the name of 12370 Private George Gunn, serving with the 2nd Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers who died 01/05/1915.

The son of John Walter and Elizabeth Gunn, of North Shields.

Angela Conroy has submitted the following taken from Shields Daily News 02/06/1915:
THE LATE PRIVATE G. GUNN
2nd N.F.
Members of the North Shields Bicycle Club and cyclists of the borough, would receive with sorrow and regret, the news of the death of Private George Gunn, who was killed in action on May 4th, near Ypres. He was for many years a prominent member of the club and a keen cyclist and worker for social and charitable events organised by cyclists. He was of a genial disposition, possessed a good base voice and rendered yeoman service to the club in the Whitsuntide Barnard Castle concerts and sketch parties, organised by the late Coun. Connacher, on behalf of the North Shields Club. He was also a keen follower and ardent exponent of the billiard games played by the Cyclist District League in the winter months, and ever ready to fill any vacancy occurring in the club, to which he was a sound comrade. Fellow clubmen, all of whom his loss will be greatly felt, offer their deepest sympathy along with his sorrowing father and mother.

Private Gunn, who was in the 2nd Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers, was 33 years of age, and a boiler to trade. He was a reservist, and was called up when the war broke out. His parents are Mr and Mrs J. W and E. Gunn, of 36 West Percy Road, North Shields.

George Gunn is remembered at North Shields on N34.77 and at Tynemouth in T36.14 page 12.
