In Puchevillers British Cemetery, France is the Commonwealth War Grave of 23/376 Private George Burton, serving with the 23rd (Tyneside Scottish) Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers who died 05/07/1916.

Susan Carmichael has provided the following.

His parents were Richard Rupert Burton, and Ellen Burton (nee Young). They were married in the 2nd quarter of 1879, the marriage being registered in Haltwhistle. Richard was a coal miner.

By 1891 Richard and Ellen were living at Front Street, Alston, Cumberland, along with George, his three brothers and a sister.

The 1901 census shows the family had moved to Northumberland, living at Centre Row, Radcliffe, Hauxley, Alnwick. The family now had seven sons and three daughters.

Richard and Ellen eventually had fourteen children, five of whom had died by 1911.

Another house move happened before the 1911 census. Their address was now 100, Pont Street, Hirst, Ashington. Richard was working as a Shifter, Stonework. It is recorded that George was working as a putter pony driver, living at this address, but there is also a record that, in fact, states that George was lodging at 16, Trojan Street, Stakeford, Choppington, Bedlington, with Alfred and Phillis Dawson.

George Burton is remembered at Bedlington on B15.06 at Stakeford on S71.02 and at  West Sleekburn on W34.01.
