Robert Thompson was born at Wandilow (Belford), Northumberland about 1890 to parents John Thompson from Bedlington, Northumberland and Annie Thompson from Embleton.

The 1901 records show Robert as being 11 years old and living in the family home at 4, Whinny Hill Choppington, a village between Bedlington and Guide Post Northumberland.

The 1911 Census shows Robert, aged 21, living in his parent’s house at Swann’s Cottages, Whinny Hill, Choppington where he was employed as a brick-maker. His father was a joiner and Robert’s siblings, John William, 23 and Maggie, 14, are also in the family house at this time.
