In Maroc British Cemetery, France is the Commonwealth War Grave of 40754 Private Joseph Irving Scott serving with the 6th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment who died 29/11/1917.

Joseph was born at Chester le Street in 1896. His parents were Michael (coal hewer) and Mary (aka Polly). The couple had 6 children but 1 died.
Joseph had 4 brothers, none of whom followed their father down the pit. They were Robert (grocer), George (blacksmith), William (plumber) and John (grocer) who also fought as a soldier in France.
Joseph enlisted in Gateshead on 10 December 1915 just a few months after the death of his father. Before he joined the East Yorks he served as 39311 with Durham Light Infantry.
Joseph was killed in action in France in November 1917 aged 21 years.
