Old Bedans’ Roll of Honour,
In the final form of which Roll it is hoped to place
the Names of all Old Boys of Bede School (1890-1915)
who were in any Branch of His Majesty’s Military or Naval Forces
during the Great War which began in 1914.
Tenth draft Roll of Honour, printed in the School magazine.
Copies were later bound into two hard-backed volumes.
The name is followed by a figure which denotes the year in which the pupil left the school
There follow analyses of those who joined which sphere of service and their ranks.
950 names, date they left the school, ranks, regiment, plus the details of 9 teachers.

1. This Roll was the tenth draft to try and ascertain all the names of former pupils who had served. Advertising had been placed in various newspapers and publications. The results contained either very full descriptions or scanty ones. The final result would be published.
2. The school was about to celebrate its 25th anniversary. The war had shortened the length of stay for some pupils to two years, others had attended for four years.
3. There were ten of these draft lists published. They obviously get longer with each version. The information for some people is repeated in later versions. The result can be a bit confusing, so an Index has been prepared for researchers to be able to see the names. See below.

The NAMES of all OLD BOYS of BEDE SCHOOL (1890-1919)
who were in any Branch of His Majesty’s Naval, Military, or Air
Forces,
During the GREAT WAR (1914-1919).
EXPLANATORY NOTES.
A. An attempt has been made-by personal inquiries, by advertisements in
ten newspapers, and by the issue of nearly 3,000 copies of a Circular
or Questionnaire-to procure information as to the (1) Name,
(2) Rank and 3) Regiment, Ship or other Section of the Navy or Army
(including the Air Force), of EVERY OLD BOY on service at any time
during the War.
Also, information has been sought with regard to EVERY OLD BOY who,
while serving in the War, has (1) Fallen, or (2) Become one of the
Missing, or (3) Been Wounded, or (4) Been taken Prisoner, or
(5) Gained Special Distinction.
B. The War List here given is based upon the materials at present
available, and contains the names of 950 Old Bedans (including
several who left school to enlist), of whom 844 are or were in the
Army (including the Air Force), 79 in the Navy, and 27 in the
Merchant Service Auxiliary to the Navy.
An ANALYSIS based on RANK gives the following figures: –
a. ARMY:
269 Officers (5 Majors, 50 Captains, 1 Chaplain, 90 Lieutenants,
123 Second-Lieutenants).
202 Non-Commissioned Officers (5 Sergeant-Majors, 10 Q.M. Sergeants,
4 Staff-Sergeants, 76 Sergeants, 47 Corporals, 40 Lance-Corporals,
20 Bombardiers).
342 Men (216 Privates, 6 Riflemen, 11 Troopers, 52 Gunners,
11 Drivers, 2 Pioneers, 25 Sappers, 3 Signallers, 12 Air-Mechanics,
4 Air-Craftsmen).
31 Cadets (including some men who have seen active service)

At the foot of the List appear the names of 9 Bede School Masters
(1 killed in action) belonging to the Army. Not being Old Boys of the
School, they are not included in the foregoing Analysis; but 2 Clerks
(of whom 1 served in the Army and 1 in the Navy), as Old Boys, are so
included. Next are given the names of 3 Sons of Masters, belonging to
the Army (including 1 Killed in action and 2 wounded); these are not
Old Bedans. Also, the names of 4 Masters who attested under Lord
Derby’s Scheme, are shown at the foot of the List.)

F. The Growth of the List has been steady. The Dates of the different
Drafts and the Number of Names in each Draft have been as

5th, April, 1916, 515; 6th, July, 1916, 570;

G. Though some hundreds of hours have been willingly and gladly
devoted to the collection and arrangement of particulars, the List
is probably incorrect in places, and is without doubt very
incomplete. Numerous alterations have been made in it from time
to time, as fresh information about men came to hand; but many
parts of it are certain to be out of date. Changes in rank, place
of station, military unit, etc., occurred frequently in some cases
during the War, and only a few of these were reported to the School.
Besides, while hostilities were going on, the War Office announced
that it depreciated the publication, in Rolls of Honour, of exact
details regarding individual soldiers. For instance, the precise
battalion to which a man belonged had to be left out. The great
cause of the List’s imperfections, however, is the fact that the
School has, in spite of much pains and some expense, found it
impossible to get into communication with a large number of Old Boys.
Not dozens or scores, but hundreds of copies of the Inquiry Circular,
sent to former pupils at addresses which those boys had when at
School, were returned-marked “Gone away,” “Not known,” “Cannot be
Traced,” and so on. Still, the result, however imperfect, is worth
the effort.
I heartily thank all persons-Old Boys, Present Pupils,
Parents, Masters and members of the general public-who have given any
help in the matter of the War List, and my particular
acknowledgements are due to my colleagues, Mr T.H. Blyth and
Mr J.H. Smithwhite, for their great assistance.
H. Peace having come and the vast majority of Old Bedans who were in the
Forces having returned to civilian life, the War List will not be
Re-printed in future issues of the School Magazine.
But, as stated in the article, “In Grateful Remembrance” which
appears on another page of the current issue, the War List and Roll
of Honour, enlarged and improved, may be published SEPARATELY IN
BOOK FORM within the next few months, should there be a practical
expression of opinion-in the shape of a guaranteed number of
subscribers-in favour of that course. In that case, use will gladly
be made of any fresh material for the List which may come to hand.
The whole SCHOOL is most grateful to Old Boys who have supported
in arms the cause of King and Country and also to their parents and
friends. We have watched, with pride, interest, sympathy, and
affection,
the careers of all Old Bedans engaged in the War; and we shall ever
remember with special gratitude the men who have fallen.
We hope and pray that they may have gained an even better reward than
grateful remembrance. “Whosoever shall lose his life shall preserve
it” (Luke xvii., 33); and an Old Bedan who died in battle for the
right may perhaps then first realised the full significance of his
school motto Post Tenebras Lux: After Darkness, Light.
