Roll of Honour
For King and Country
Thames Street
Roll of Honour, “plain but very neat design, encased in a handsome oak framed shrine” with pedimented top.
The Roll of Honour is of a popular pre-printed design.
At centre top is a scroll bearing the words “Roll of Honour” below which is a wreath with a ribbon bearing the words “For King and Country”.
The names are listed in four columns, those from the Army at the top, those from the Navy listed below.

1. “The memorial was arranged through the joint efforts of Mrs. Herrington, of 62 Thames Street (whose only brother died whilst a prisoner of war) and Mrs. Geo. Dobson.”
2. “This excellent source of information lists the men’s rank, unit/regiment, whether they had been killed, drowned, wounded or become a POW or awarded gallantry medals. It even lists the details of men who were serving with the Australian Imperial Force but who hailed from that street – or immediate surrounding area.”
3. In a newspaper article, there is discussion about the way that people felt about leaving their homes, which were to be demolished, and gong to live on the new Deans estate. “We want to take the War Memorial, too. If they don’t have it at the old Thames Street Mission in Waterloo Vale, we want it fixed up in Thames Lane on the new estate. They can call this place a slum, but we’ve always been proud of our Memorial.”
4. The Deans Estate did not survive. It, too, became a slum, and was demolished around 1980.
