Fidelis Usque ad mortem

Memorial Description:

Wood panel with moulded frame, 36 inches high x 68 inches wide (91cms x 173cms) with laurel leaves carved in half relief on the frame.

The main panel is divided into three main sections. The left and right bear names in single columns.

The central section is divided horizontally.

The upper panel bears the dedication hand written in gold with black shadowing.

The lower half is sub-divided into two further panels bearing names.

Apart from the words “In memory of” which are in Gothic, all other lettering is in sans serif capitals.

The school motto is carved into a raised cartouche on the lower frame.

Notes:

1. The school is also a war memorial. See  W111.31.

2. The school, at Longhill, almost at Seaton Carew, was a fair distance from its parent church. It was eventually demolished and the plaque is now in St. Aidan’s Memorial School. The intention to make this transfer was already planned when this plaque was dedicated in the original school.

3. From the school, 614 had served, of whom 102 fell.

4. Theo Jones, named on the memorial was a teacher at the school 1905-1913. He was the first soldier to die on home soil during the Bombardment of Hartlepool December 16th 1914.
