Memorial Description:

Plaque with slightly rounded top set on a wood pattress which echoes the shape.

There is a very narrow border punctuated at intervals with a small motif.

In each top corner is a bunch of grapes and vine leaves.

At centre top is a wreath with ribbons.

All decoration is raised in half relief.

Names are in two columns in raised Roman capitals.

Notes:

1. The unveiling should have been performed by Major General Sir R.A.K. Montgomery, but he was ill and unable to attend. The headmaster, Mr. Gillespie, was also absent through illness.

2. A sum of £15,130 15shillings was sanctioned by the Newcastle School Board to build the school which, when it opened, was considered to offer the most sanitary environment of any educational establishment in the city, with a state of the art ventilation system comparable with the best in the country.

3. Over the years our building has housed separate infant, junior and secondary schools, a WW2 billet and, for a time, the graphic design department of a local college. Now it is home to both Chillingham Road Primary School. The school still holds many records of its past, including a war memorial, artefacts, log books, registers and punishment books.
