Treble bell
1939-1945 To those who suffered. Given by Group 2 Civil Defence Association.

No.7 bell provided by St. Andrew’s Social Fellowship and Young Communicants’ League ‘Fellowship”

Nos 2,3,4,5 and 9 and the tenor were given by private donors and carry personal inscriptions

The Tenor was given anonymously and bears the simple inscription ‘To the Glory of God.’

Peal of ten bells.

Notes:

1. The Right Rev. Leonard Wilson had been Vicar of Singapore, and was imprisoned and badly treated by the Japanese during 1939-45. He later became a much-respected Bishop of Birmingham.

2. Sunderland Echo 27/09/1948 reports
“The youngest bell ringer is 16 year old Miss Audrey Pughe who starts work as a shorthand typist today. All other 14 members of the team are young people and the captain Miss Doreen Martin a school teacher is only 22.”
