Memorial Description:

Chancel.

There is a plaque on the north wall, in the form of a scroll, very plain, with only a small cross incised top centre.

The plaque measures 54 inches high x 30 inches wide (137cms x 76cms) on a pattress 6 inches wider (15cms) all round.

The names are in three columns, using sans serif capitals throughout.

The eulogy at the bottom is in italic sans serif capitals.

Notes:

1. Shields Daily News 27/11/1923 reports the unveiling on 26th November 1923 by Dr. C.T. Babet of a marble plaque which carried the dedication “This tablet was erected to the glory of God and in loving memory of the men of this Parish who laid down their lives in the Great War 1914-1918” and bore 96 names.

2. The extensions included vestries, an organ chamber, and increased seating for 200 people.

3. A time capsule containing a local daily paper, church magazines, coins and a scroll bearing the names of the Vicar and churchwardens was placed in a cavity beneath the foundation stone.

4. Having laid the foundation stone, Sir G.B. Hunter was presented with a silver trowel.
