Memorial Description:

Plaque.

At the top is a crucifix in an elaborate setting, with gilded tracery above and below.

Below this is a plaque 48 inches high x 36 inches wide (122cms x 91cms).

It has a thick single line border which also divides the quotations above and below into their own rectangles.

The names are listed in three columns using sans serif capitals throughout.

The lower smaller plaque also has a single line border, the names listed in three columns divided by vertical lines.

The words of dedication are incised into the frame below the relevant panel in elaborate letters.

Notes:

1. The original design was for a Calvary with tablets below making provision for candlestick brackets on either side of the memorial, but the approval process insisted that the candlesticks be omitted, in case the crucifix included within the design became an object of devotional attention – especially as there were proposals to have candles lit a couple of times a year.

2. The memorial for is described as being a “shrine in oak with a gunmetal tablet”.

3. In 2011 to celebrate 100 years of St Aidan, Dr. Robert Barry Shepherd produced A centenary History 1911-2011. There are chapters on both World Wars and the names on both plaques have been expanded
