FLAG FROM YPRES
When on March 25-1920 the body of Sgt W.G.RAMSHAW was conveyed from
the Zouave Wood to the cemetery at Ypres the above flag was laid upon his
remains. It had flown with the Red Cross flag for a long time during the war above Ypres Field Hospital

Memorial Description:

Plaque 13 inches high x 21 inches wide (33cms x 53cms) set on a wood pattress 17 inches high x 24 inches wide (43cms x 61cms) with bevelled edge.

There is a double line border culminating in a square leaf motif at the corners.

At top left is the badge of the Durham Light Infantry.

Lettering is in red and blue Roman capitals. Beside is a Union flag.

Underneath is a plaque 11 inches high x 14 inches wide (28cms x 36cms) which tells the story of the Union flag in sans serif capitals.

Notes:

1. The Sunderland Echo 09/09/1916 reports the faculty and says that for many years he was a Sunday School Teacher and member of the choir. It will be unveiled at a special service to be announced shortly.

2. The Sunderland Echo 29/03/1920 reports the unveiling of the two memorial tablets and that Mr Lawrence E. Brook of the Graves Inquiry Bureau at Ypres forwarded to the Rev A.A. Boddy on Saturday the Union Jack which he said for long during the war flew over the Ypres Field Hospital. He presented it to All Saints Church. The Vicar met Mr Brook when visiting Ypres last year in an endeavour to find the grave of Sergt. Wm. Ramshaw, a member of the church. His body has now been re-interred in the Ypres Reservoir Military Cemetery and when it was conveyed from Zouave Wood last Thursday to its last resting place the flag was laid upon the body.
