Cross with tapering shaft on top of stepped pedestal, set within railings.
The lettering is incised on all four faces.
The names of those who died are on the front face, those who served in two columns on two sides and back.
On the floor on each side is a tile bearing the transcript of the badly eroded face above.
Each tile is of polished granite set on a sandstone base.
Lettering is incised and blackened using sans serif capitals throughout.
At the unveiling, there was an iron railing surround.
20 full names of those who died;
92 full names of those who served.

1. “What a red-letter day was February 5th in the history of Monkton Church and Village! Surely the day will never be forgotten by those of us who attended the service. The prayers were said very clearly by the Rural Dean. The singing of hymns and Te Deum was splendid. Mrs. Richardson gracefully unveiled the cross, and Mr. Richardson made a capital speech in which he complimented all of us who had worked at the scheme, and gave the crowd several details about its dimensions and cost. On behalf of the subscribers, Mr. Hopper handed over the Memorial to the Parish Council, and the chairman of that body, Mr. Atkinson, received it. Bishop Ormsby’s words after the dedication were very telling indeed. We will long remember his advice about looking backward and upward and forward. About twenty wreaths and crosses were placed round the cross.The tea which followed in the dining room of Monkton Hall was a great success. We were fortunate in having the Mayor and Mayoress of Jarrow with us. The Mayor proposed a vote of thanks to the Bishop and Mrs. Richardson, and it did one good to hear the Bishop’s jovial reply. To thank by name those who have helped forward the success of this effort would be impossible; there is the long list of subscribers, several collectors, those who lent cab and motor and room for tea, those who looked after the refreshments, the choir, and last but not least, the sculptor for his fine piece of work.
May they each and all find satisfaction as they remember the day of dedication and look at the noble monument and include themselves in the prayer carved on the stone “Grant, Lord, that we / Full worthy be / Of these -our loved-our sacrificed. (Jarrow Magazine March 1921).
2. At the unveiling, over £90 had been raised towards the £120 cost of the cross.
3. Restored and rededicated Saturday October 22nd 2005. The restoration of the names was due to the Royal British Legion secretary Jim Williamson
4. The restoration was assisted by a grant from the War Memorials Trust. The total cost was £13,000.
