Unveiled Thursday 26th May 1921 by the Chairman of Northumberland County Council Local Education Authority, Alderman A.E. Bell. The Mayor presided with Corporation in attendance.

Materials Used:

Brass mounted on oak.

Present Condition: Recently restored.

Metallic Engraving Co., Pilgrim Street, Newcastle.

Scholars of the Corporation School
who fell in the Great War

Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends

Memorial Description:

Plaque 42 inches high x 30 inches wide (107cms x 76cms).

The surrounding narrow patterned border and various dividing lines are enamelled in red.

The words “Pro Patria” are in elaborate lettering.

The names are listed in three columns in Roman lower case.

Notes:

1. 500 former pupils had joined up, of whom 81 died.

2. “It will be certain that no war memorial will be half so valuable as one placed in a school, as in addition to its value as a testimony to the brave fellows who laid down their lives, the number of uses to which it can be put for present and future children at the school are both invaluable and endless”.
