Mr. Walter Gilbert, Birmingham.

Memorial Description:

Plaque, comprising five carved panels.

There are twisted pilasters dividing the panels, which have cherub faces at the bottom of each.

Above is a heavily carved cornice. In the centre panel is Christ crucified, with an angel at the foot of the cross on either side.

In the panel to his left is St. George, representing the triumph of good over evil.

The centre right panel depicts St. Michael, representing the defeat of Craft.

The far left panel contains figures of a soldier and a nurse, and the far right contains figures of a sailor and a mother with child.

The names are carried in the five panels below the figures.

There is an extension below for 1939-45.

It has a raised edge and a panel at each end with a stylized Tudor rose.

Above them are acorns and a poppyhead.

Names are in two lines.

All lettering is in raised Roman capitals.

Below these is another panel which bears a quotation “No man liveth unto himself . No man dieth unto himself”.

Notes:

1. The above information is taken from an unknown book in which the designer gives his descriptive notes.

2. “A deep note of pathos was struck by the actual unveiling, performed by Mr. J.T. Young, and leader of the church, whose son is numbered among the fallen. The sight of the white-haired father, the cord of the flag which veiled the bronze trembling in his fingers, and his lips quivering as he laid the laurel wreath in its place at the foot of the tablet, brought home to the younger members of the congregation the sorrow and grief which have been the portion of so many parents who loved and gave – their all”.
