In honour of the men of this colliery who
fought and in ever grateful remembrance
of those who gave their lives for God
and Country, for Right, for Freedom, and
for Peace, in the Great War.
“See ye to it
That these shall not have died in vain.
Their name liveth for evermore”.

On riser:

On the step below:
In the year 2000 AD
this memorial was restored by
the people of Hamsterley and Low Westwood
so that generations present and future
may honour the Great Sacrifice made for us all.

Memorial Description:

Cross of wheel type on a tapered two tiered pedestal resting on three steps.

The tapered shaft of the cross has a cable design raised around its front edge, and there are raised bosses at the four points of the cross.

The dates are in the shaft, raised in carving.

Below them is one name and a part of the dedication.

The rest of the dedication is on the front face of the pedestal, with the name of the colliery on the lower section of the pedestal.

On the other three faces of the lower part of the pedestal are the names for 1939-45.

On the bottom step is the statement telling of the restoration of the memorial in the year 2000.

All lettering is in Roman capitals.

Notes:

1. “The memorial is a particular memorial to Major Arthur T. Watson, to whom there is a dedication at the base of the cross. Watson was a member of the family that owned Hamsterley Colliery and the choice of architect would have been the result of earlier work Brierley carried out for the Watsons, both in Yorkshire and at Hamsterley.” (Edward Waterson)

2. A new bench and fencing and a new plaque were added in 2000

3. July 2019 visit – R. Key has been added to the names for 1939-45.
