He was accompanied by Capt. Richard Annand, then the sole surviving D.L.I. winner of the V.C.

Sandstone from Stainton Quarry with marble plaque.

Glass bubbles made at the National Glass Centre, Sunderland.

Memorial Description:

“Celebration Stone” 48 inches high x 60 inches wide x 32 inches deep (1.2m x 1.52m x 812mm)

A plaque 36 inches high x 42 inches wide (914mm x 1.06m) carries the names.

A glass bubble has been set in the top right and left corners, one bearing a replica of the Victoria Cross and the other a replica of the D.L.I. badge.

Lettering is incised and gilded using serif upper and lower case lettering.

11 names, ranks, country and year of death.

Notes:

1. Richard Annand died 24 December 2004.

2. The medals belonging to Private Michael Heaviside, V.C. were handed over to the D.L.I. Regimental Museum whilst it was at Brancepeth Castle. They were added to a display of medals already in the Museum. They were in the Durham Light Infantry Medal Room at Palace Green.

3. There was a subscription Roll buried under this Memorial.  April 2018 the stone was re-located to Palace Green, outside the Durham University Library. Was the time capsule with the scroll moved at the same time?
