Flyleaf

  This Souvenir

  of the members of the

   “ROLL of HONOUR”

  is issued by the

  North Road Wesleyan Church and

  School, Darlington,

  In Loving Memory

of those of her sons who fell, gallantly

fighting for God and Fatherland, and

  An Appreciation

with gratitude to God, of those who.

  having endured hardship and braved

the horrors of modern warfare, were

  spared to Home and Duty

  INTRODUCTION

  For Britain the nineteenth

century went out in a blaze of

  glory. Never did her foundations

seem more secure, her power so

far reaching, her dominions so wide.

The whole world looked on astonished

and uneasy. Then came the Boer War

  and disillusionment.  Decadence

was in the air, and thoughtful men

  wondered whether, should the real

testing time come, the young men of

  to-day would prove themselves as

brave and worthy as their fathers had

  been.

The dark days of 1914 followed and

with them came the call to the

  nation’s manhood.  What a response!

The clerk left his office, the school-

  master his class-room, the craftsman

left his workshop, the farmer his

  plough and the grandest voluntary

army ever known marched out to fight

for God and Right. And there, amid

all the fiendish devices of modern

warfare, whether on land, sea or in

air, they proved true to the proudest

traditions of their race. The glories

of the past were eclipsed, and a page,

  more thrilling than any hitherto

recorded, was added to our national

story. But “Not unto us, Oh Lord

Not unto us. Thine be the glory.”

Our church was not found wanting

and to keep fresh and green the

memory of the Mighty Dead, and to

honour those who are spared to assist

in the rebuilding of a shattered world,

is the purpose of this little Souvenir.
