Oak altar frontal case.

This Baptistry is made to the Glory of God
and in memory of the men of this Parish
who laid down their lives in the 1939-1945 War.

Baptistry.

There is an oak altar frontal case 42 inches high x 108 inches wide x 12 inches deep (107cms x 274cms x 30cms) which has a narrow traceried panel at each end.

The centre is divided into three wide panels, each of which bears a badge of one of the three services, each raised inside a roundel in half relief, coloured and gilded (left) Royal Navy, (Centre) Army, (Right) Royal Air Force.

The centre panel has the names carved in Roman capitals.

1. This church also has the title of “Collegiate Church of St. Cuthbert”.

2. “On Saturday 24th May 1945 a peal of Grandsire Triples of 5040 Changes was rung in three hours and seven minutes by the Durham & Newcastle Diocesan Association “to commemorate the Victory over Germany of the United Nations in the War 1939-45”.
The tenor bell weighed 18 cwt and 14 lbs.
The ringers were William Oliver (Treble, who rang first peal in the method);
Robert T. Simpson on No.2, who rang the first peal of the method inside;
Richard Busby on No.3 who also rang the first peal of the method inside;
George F. Newton, No. 4 ;
Roland Park, No.5;
James T. Titt, No.6;
W. Norman Park, No.7;
Lucien Venus, Tenor.
The peal was composed by Rev. C.R. James and conducted by Roland Park.
