Statue of helmeted infantryman resting on a reversed rifle.
It stands on a square pedestal on a three-stepped base, in a paved area with gardens nearby.
The dedication for 1914-18 is carried on the front of the pedestal with the quotation below.
The names are listed in two columns on the two sides and back.
The names from 1939-45 are on a sloping stone fixed to the top step.
All lettering is in sans serif capitals.

1. A crowd of some 7,000 attended the unveiling in 1920.
2. From a population of less than 8,000, 1100 men served, 205 died in 1914-18
3. Sir Thomas Oliver was given a granite paper weight as a memento of the occasion.
4. From the list of names on the programme: Hetherington R.J. reads Hetherington R.H. on memorial; Posket reads Poskett on memorial.
5. Keith Callendar writes: The name T.G. Houghton appears to be incorrect. It should be J.J. Houghton. John James Houghton was killed whilst serving with the D.L.I. at the Battle of the Somme and is commemorated on the memorial at Thiepval. His name appears correctly on the Roll of Honour in St. John’s Church, Chopwell (C92.02)
