Memorial Description:

Plaque, 48 inches high x 36 inches wide (122cms x 91cms), with slightly rounded top.

It has classical pilasters at the sides with a floral motif in relief at the top.

The words “War Memorial” at the top are raised and gilded.

Similarly the dated “1914-1918” at the bottom.

The dedication is in elaborate upper and lower case.

The names are painted in three columns, using Roman lettering.

Notes:

1. At the unveiling, the memorial was described as “encased in a walnut frame, with an enamelled laurel leaf design . . . the dedicatory inscription and names of the fallen are executed in silver relief lettering on a plaque background of cobalt blue . . . “. It also mentions 32 former pupils who fell.

2. Correspondence discloses that there was a fund of over £100 made by donations from Joyce Hooper (formerly Rowland) following a former pupil reunion, and the last Miss Cringle of Spittal, to be used for mounting and displaying the boards in the Museum.

3. When Grammar School closed in 1976 the memorial was moved to the new High School, through the agency of Miss Jean Trimmer, Headmistress of the School until it closed.

4. Some of the letters at the top are damaged.
