On the east side of the road through the village to New Brancepeth, just south of the “Prince Bishop” which was formerly the “Three Tuns”.

dedicated by Rev. S.R.P. Moulsdale, B.D., Principal of St. Chad’s College, Durham.

b. Rededicated after addition of 1939-45 names by Mr. Ivor Atkinson and Rev. Fr. R. Stretton.

Obelisk, 10 feet high (3m), tapering, set on a pedestal resting on four steps.

There is a cross raised in half relief on the front face of the column.

The dedication and names are incised into the main pedestal on all four faces, using sans serif capitals throughout.

1. The memorial was dismantled and removed by Royal Engineers. It was cleaned and the lettering redone by stonemasons.

2. The names from 1939-45 were added in 1989.

3. The name of the stonemason, J. Walker, was inscribed by rival stonemason Mr. Smith (Mr. Walker’s granddaughter).
