On Tower Hill Memorial is the name of Chief Officer William Hunter, serving on S.S. Torchbearer (London) with the Mercantile Marine, who died 19/11/1939.

He was the son of Simon and Robina Hunter and the husband of Constance Muriel Hunter, of Bramhope, Yorkshire.

The Scout Roll of Honour 1939-45 states that he was a Rover Scout in Whitley Bay.
