On Tower Hill Memorial is the name of Third Engineer Herman Carl Schier, serving on S.S. Claverley (Newcastle) with the Mercantile Marine, who died 20/08/1917.

The son of Catherine Louisa Fortune (formerly Schier), of 81, Jesmond Terrace, Whitley Bay, Northumberland, and the late George Emil Schier. He was born at Newcastle upon Tyne.

In Whitley Bay (Hartley South) Cemetery is a family headstone which reads:

Died 27th Aug. 1918

Also her son
Herman Carl Schier (M.N.)
Died 20th Aug. 1917.

Herman Carl Schier is remembered in the Mercantile Marine  Roll of Honour 1917  and in our List of Ships’ Crews.
