In Tynemouth (Preston) Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave with a private headstone of Chief Engineer Officer John Sewell Wilkie, serving on S.S. Empire Ballad (Sunderland) with the Merchant Navy who died 10/12/1945.

The headstone reads:

In loving memory of my dear wife
Margaret Jane Cairns,
who fell asleep Nov. 11th 1938,
aged 70 years.

William Cairns, her husband
died May 14th 1952, aged 83 years.

He  was the son of John Sewell Wilkie and Isabella Wilkie, of North Shields, and the husband of Lucy Wilkie, of North Shields.
