In Tynemouth (Preston) Cemetery is a headstone which reads:

The Family Burial Place

John and Margaret Southern

In loving memory of
Charlotte,
daughter of the above
and beloved wife of William E. Ogle
who died Jan. 23rd 1924, aged 26 years.

God hath made this a rest.

Also in loving memory of
my dear husband
John Southern,
who died Aug. 16th 1935,
aged 64 years

Also his wife Margaret Jane
who died Sept. 13th 1945, aged 76 years.

also their son James,
beloved husband of Ellen Southern
killed on active service, H.M.D. Summer Rose
13th Oct. 1940, aged 50 years.

Also their daughter Mary Ann,
beloved wife of T.M. McGuire
killed during air raid
May 4th 1941, aged 47 years.

His sister Mary McGuire died in the Wilkinson’s bombing raid.

James Southern is remembered in our List of Ships’ Crews.

Mrs. McGuire is remembered at North Shields on N34.56
