In Tynemouth (Preston) Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave with a private headstone of 1896425 Sapper Alan Kay serving with the 233 Field Company Royal Engineers who died 20/07/1940.

The headstone reads:

To the memory of my dear husband
William Middleston Kay,
May 22nd 1880? July 10th 1934

Also our dear son Alan,
Oct. 31st 1915 July 20th 1940

Also our dear son Cyril,
May 18th 1918 lost at sea
on active service Sept. 1943

And Mabel, beloved wife of W.H. Kay
May 5th 1882 Oct. 11th 1945.

Alan Kay was born on the 31st October 1915. He was the son of William H. Kay and Mabel Kay, born 4th May 1882, of North Shields.

Alan resided at 11 Ancroft Avenue, Tynemouth, Northumberland, with his widowed mother Mabel in 1939. He was a Clerk in the Tynemouth Borough’s Treasurer department before enlisting.

His brother Cyril also died.
