He was killed with 16 other crew members when the vessel was in a collision near Longstone Light.

The Portadown Times 19/04/1940 reports:-
Mrs. Robert Scott, Banford, Gilford, has been informed of the death of her brother, Leading Signalman Dorrington Shortt. Aged 28 years, he had 12 years’ service.
