Every Name a Story
On Tower Hill Memorial is the name of Mess Room Boy Raymond Bertram Major, serving on S.S. Sheaf Mount (Newcastle upon Tyne) with the Merchant Navy who died 24/08/1942.
Andrew Russell has sent in the following:
Hi my name is Andrew Russell and Raymond Bertram Major was my Grandad’s brother. My Grandad’s name was Ronald Major and his daughter is my mum. Raymond had another brother called Maurice and a sister called Eunice. I knew them both but sadly, along with my Grandad, they are no longer with us. All three made it to their 80’s though.
We all come from Portsmouth and my Grandad was in the British Army during the war. He was at Dunkirk and when evacuated ended up in Halifax in Yorkshire where he met and married my Nan.
Shortly after he went off to Europe again and eventually returned in 1946 from Italy when he met his daughter, my Mum, for the first time when she was 5 years old.
Anyway, I thought I’d tell you that story.
Also, I went to London a few years ago to the Merchant Navy Monument and saw the plague for the Sheaf Mount and Raymond’s name.
Acknowledgments: Barney Rice.
Raymond Bertram Major is remembered at Newcastle on NUT015 and in our List of Ships’ Crews.
