On Portsmouth Naval Memorial is the name of SS/112500 Stoker 1st Class James Waugh serving on H.M.S. Hampshire with the Royal Navy, who died 05/06/1916.

The son of Rachel Waugh, of 61, Monday Street, Newcastle upon Tyne, and the late Nicholas Waugh.

In Newcastle (St. John Westgate & Elswick) Cemetery is a family headstone which reads:

In loving memory of
Nicholas, beloved husband of Rachel Waugh
who died Nov.8th 1916, aged 54 years,

also of James, their eldest son,
who was lost on H.M.S. Hampshire, 5th June 1916, aged 28 years,

and Nicholas, their son who died in infancy

also of Annie, beloved daughter of the above
died September 24th 1930, aged 39 years

also of the above Rachel Waugh
died November 3rd 1933 aged 75 years.

James was born in the first quarter of 1888 at Ford, Northumberland, the son of Nicholas and Rachel (nee Mather) of 61 Monday Street, Newcastle upon Tyne. In 1911 he was a Railway Lamp Trimmer.

He served as a Stoker 1st Class on H.M.S. ‘Hampshire’ which allegedly struck a mine and sank off the Orkneys while taking the Secretary of State for War, Lord Kitchener, to a secret meeting in Northern Russia with the Tsar.
