John Easton was born on 5th September 1916, the son of John and Janet of Newcastle upon Tyne. He was married to Charlotte and they lived at 46 Heathwell Road, Denton Burn.

H.M.S. Sussex was built by Hawthorn, Leslie & Co., Hebburn and was launched on 22nd February 1928. She spent 1944-45 in the Pacific Theatre and entered Singapore harbour on 5th September 1945, flying Rear Admiral Cedric Hollands flag. She received General Itagaki, the commander of the Singapore Garrison, onboard to sign the formal surrender of the army, signalling the end of Operation Tiderace.
