On Tower Hill Memorial is the name of Master Thomas Rayne Kirby, serving on S.S. Empire Lawrence (Sunderland) with the Merchant Navy who died 06/03/1942.

Master Kirby was in command of S.S. “Empire Lawrence”. He died of natural causes at sea on the 6th March 1942.

When his medals were forwarded to his wife Eva, she was residing at 84, Wansbeck Avenue, Cullercoats.

His son, also called Thomas Rayne Kirby died in 1941.
