On Tower Hill Memorial is the name of Steward William Robertson Young, serving on S.S. Lonclara with the Mercantile Marine who died 04/01/1917.

The son of John and Hannah Jane Young and the husband of Hannah Sophia Young, of 41, Mile End Road, South Shields. He was born at South Shields.

William was born on the 2nd February 1888, baptised 29th February 1888, one of eight children of John born 1853, and Hannah Jane nee Robertson, Young, born 1854, Newcastle upon Tyne, died 1939, at 24 Military Road, South Shields. The other children were Margaret Bell Young, born 1876, John Edward Young, 1879, Robert Mills Young, born 1881, Hnet Allen Young, born 1886, Henrietta Young, born 1886 and Septimus Young.

William Robertson Young was a Steward, he married Hannah Sophie Reid in 1916. They lived at 41 Mile end Road, South Shields, Co Durham.

SS Lonclara, built by Ropner & Sons, Ltd., Stockton in 1911, owned at the time of her loss by Port of London Authority, London, was built as a Hopper Barge. Converted to a Cargo Ship in 1916 as a British steamer of 1294 tons.

On the 4th January 1917, “SS Lonclara” was sunk by a mine from the German U Boat UC-31, commanded by Kapitnleutnant Otto von Schrader, 0,5m east of Hendon Rock Buoy, River Wear. 4 persons were lost.
