On Chatham Naval Memorial is the name of 1011EA Engine Room Artificer Reginald William Davis, serving on H.M.S. Aboukir with the Royal Naval Reserve who died 22/09/1914.

Colin Boyd has provided the following:

Reginald William was born in Sydney, Australia on 30th June 1884 the son of William and Emily Davis.

When he joined the Royal Naval Reserve on 1st April 1912 he was living at 38, George Street, South Shields and was employed as a sea going engineer. Reginald married Rosina on 17th March 1914 and her address was given as 29, Heydon Street, Sydney, Australia.

Reginald was called up in August 1914 and was posted to HMS Aboukir, ship number 108151,  torpedoed by U-9 commanded by Kapitanleutnant Otto Weddigen on the 22nd September 1914.

Tynemouth T36.14 gives his address as Lansdowne Terrace.

(Note: his papers give his rank as Stoker, Petty Officer but the Pension Ledger gives his rank as Engine Room Artificer)

Reginald William Davis is remembered at Tynemouth in T36.14 page 9, at South Shields on S86.102 and in our List of Ships’ Crews.
