On Tower Hill Memorial is the name of First Engineer David Cunningham, serving on S.S. Caithness (Newcastle) with the Mercantile Marine who died 20/04/1917.

The husband of Annabel Cunningham, of 38, Vespasian Avenue, South Shields.

David Cunningham was born in Aberdeen. He married Annabel Purvis, on the 23rd August 1884 at South Shields.

The Steamer Caithness, ship number 106629, was torpedoed by a German U Boat U 52, commanded by Kapitänleutnant Hans Walther, 130 miles NWxN of Cape Ortegal. The port of Tyne was was its departure port. Total casualties 47.

David Cunningham is remembered at South Shields on S86.046 and S86.143 and in our List of Ships’ Crews.
