On the Tower Hill Memorial is the name of Master William Norman Thompson, serving on S.S. Cheldale (Newcastle upon Tyne) with the Merchant Navy, who died 17/02/1940.

S.S. Cheldale collided with with Greystoke Castle ( United Kingdom) in the Indian Ocean 24 nautical miles (44 km) off Durban, South Africa with the loss of 16 of her 35 crew.
