In Jarrow Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave with a private headstone of Second Engineer Officer Frederick William Watson serving on S.S. MacLaren (Cardiff) with the Merchant Navy who died 03/12/1941.

The son of Thomas and Mary Ann Watson, of Jarrow and the husband of Annie Isobel Watson, of Hebburn.

The headstone reads:-

Treasured memories of
Frederick W. Watson M.N.
Killed by enemy action 3rd Dec. 1941

and his beloved wife
Annie Isabella
died 1st Jan. 1973

Frederick William Watson Second Engineer Officer. S.S. MacLaren, ship number 135602, (Cardiff) Merchant Navy.

Frederick William Watson was the son of Thomas and Mary Ann Watson, of Jarrow; husband of Annie Isobel Watson, of Hebburn. The S.S. MacLaren, struck a mine on the 3rd December 1941, it was on passage from Liverpool to Barry, in ballast, and sunk in the Bristol Channel with the loss of 3 lives.

Frederick William Watson is remembered at Jarrow on J2.07,  J2.15 and J2.38 and in our List of Ships’ Crews.
