On Plymouth Naval Memorial is the name of J/37836 Ordinary Seaman Ernest Hastie, serving on H.M.S. Defence with the Royal Navy who died 31/05/1916.

He was the son of John A. and Elizabeth Hastie, of 27, Easson Road, Darlington

The NER Magazine reports:-
Another NER man who helped to pay the price of victory in the Jutland Sea Battle on May 31 was Seaman Gunner E Hastie who was serving on HMS Defence.
