On Tower Hill Memorial is the name of First Engineer John William Allan, serving with the Mercantile Marine, who died 28/12/1917.
John William Allan was the son of the late William and Jane Ann Allan and the husband of Jane Frances Allan, of 118, Cleveland Road, Sunderland. He had been born at Sunderland.
The Steamer Santa Amalia, ship number 120949, sailed from Lamlash in convoy OB34 on the previous day, was torpedoed 30 miles NxE1/2E of Malin Head by the German U Boat U 19, commanded by Kapitänleutnant Johannes Spieß, on a voyage from Manchester to Puerto Mexico in ballast, suffering 43 casualties.
