On Tower Hill Memorial is the name of Master John H. Merrix, serving on S.S. Ludgate with the Mercantile Marine who died 26/07/1917.

In Gateshead East Cemetery is a family headstone which reads:

Mary Elizabeth
beloved wife of
John H. Merrix
who departed this life
Sept. 24th 1916, aged 46 years.

Also of the above
John H. Merrix
Master Mariner
who was lost at sea July 26th 1917
aged 43 years.

Also of Emma
Beloved wife of the late
Francis Carrick
who departed this life
Decr. 11th 1921, aged 77 years.
